The famous Temple and Mosque standing together in Trivandrum, Kerala at Night

One of the most famous fixtures of the capital city of Kerala is the famous image of a hindu temple and mosque standing together, or next to each other. The image is often shown as the example for the religious harmony that exists in the state. So, here is that picture. The temple is the Sree Sakthi Vinayaka Temple and the mosque is the Palayam Juma Masjid. The photo was taken at night with the temple and the mosque in all their lit up glory.

The location is the center of the city at Palayam (old Cantonment of the Travancore Army) that also houses a war memorial and old market. There are also not one but two churches in the area, the more famous St.Joseph’s Metropolitan Cathedral of the Latin Catholic church that stands across the road to the mosque and the not-so well-known St.Mary’s Basilica of the Syro-Malankara Catholic church that stands behind the temple. To be honest this kind of layout is quite common in Kerala.

Well they aren’t really truly standing next to each other because there is a building with a juice shop in between them.

The entire area of Palayam contains the core of the deep and storied history of the states of Travancore and Kerala.
