Two Plum Headed Parakeets Eating Rice Grains

Parakeets are a species of Parrot

A photo of a couple of Plum Headed Parakeets (Psittacula Cyanocephala) sitting on a power (electricity) line eating rice grains off stalks they plucked from a paddy field. These birds known as Parakeets are often referred to as Parrots though they are only one among many species of Parrot. They are extremely common in Kerala and these two from from a group of hundreds that descended upon the field to snack on rice grains. The read headed bird is a male while the other one is a female. The way the eat is fascinating to watch. They balance themselves by holding the stalk up on one leg while gripping their perch with the other. They then meticulously extract the grain from its husk using their beaks before swallowing the grain. the Seen in Kottayam district, Kerala.
