The Northern View Point of Thanneermukkom Bund

The Thanneermukkom Bund is a 1.4 km long barrier erected across the Vembanad Lake in Kerala to prevent the intrusion of salt water from the Arabian Sea in the north into the Kuttanad farming basin in the south of the lake. It was built in 1974 to large-scale controversies along the narrowest stretch of the lake. The bund has 31 shutters and two navigation locks to let larger vessels through the Bund. The barrier is an essential and important feature in enabling the Kuttanad rice farming region, known as the Rice Bowl of Kerala by preventing salt water from reaching the paddies. The bridge alongside the Bund is one of the only two connecting roads between the Kottayam and Alappuzha districts, connecting Kumarakom with Cherthala.
