The Distant Suranganaru Water Falls, Theni District

In the far distance, a silver sheet of water cascades from a steep mountain face topped by clouds and fronted by a round green hillock. This scene is  from the Theni – Kottayam highway after Gudalur in Theni district Tamil Nadu, the Suranganaru waterfalls. The plains surrounded on three side by mountains from where the photo was taken is in Tamil Nadu while the mountains of the Western Ghats seen here are in Kerala (but the mountain face is in Tamil Nadu). The mountain face is part of the sudden eastern limits of the Western Ghats which abruptly rise a 1000 meters from the plains. On top of the mountain is Chellarkovil from where the falls originate. The crops in the foreground are grapes and the greenery seen all around is thanks to water from the Mullaperiyar dam. This place with its stunning natural beauty is set with a unique history going back several centuries.
