A Colorful Sunset at Kottayam

When the sun sets, it paints the sky in a mesmerising palette, in front of which everything else fades to black. The scene of this sunset was a hot late summer evening at Kodimatha in Kottayam, Kerala, India with everything else, including the Chicking outlet turning into black silhouettes in front of the brilliant sunset. The photo has been color-enhanced, but these colors of the sunset – yellow, orange, gold, blue, purple and pink – are all real.

The Ashtamudi Lake at Dusk Appears as God’s Canvas

A riot of colors makes the sky above the Ashtamudi lake backwaters near Kollam in South Kerala appear like the canvas of a beautiful oil painting, the sky being God’s canvas. The picture shows the typical idyllic picture postcard perfect Kerala setting: palm fringed shores, lazily lapping waves, a boatman or two on the water. The picture was taken from a running train on the Ashtamudi railway bridge just after sunset when the sky is usually even more spectacular than during the actual sunset. The Ashtamudi lake is the most visited backwater in Kerala and a major tourist attraction in Kerala. Merry Christmas!

The Parasuram Express on a Girder Bridge in a Wet and Green Kerala

On a wet and overcast day with rain threatening to fall any minute, the 16650 Nagercoil – Mangalore Parasuram Express passes over a rust-stained girder bridge in central Kerala, just after Aluva and the famous bridge across the Periyar river with the view of the Aluva Manappuram, hauled by a mud-splattered bright orange-red and yellow Erode 5350 hp WAP4 class electric locomotive with road number #22580. The waterbody across which this bridge is built is a small overflow channel of the Periyar. The locomotive sliding majestically across the girder which has no side rails, the rails on the edge of the bridge which is in all lesser in width than the train itself, has always fascinated me. These bridges are however becoming increasingly rare.

Kathakali Faces Hang Around at LuLu Mall, Ernakulam

Kathakali face cutouts hung on display at the LuLu Mall in Ernakulam (Kochi), Kerala during the Onam festival season like all mall interiors are decorated. Along with Onam, Snake Boats etc., Kathakali and its faces are among the strongest cultural synonyms and representative images (and tourist attractions) of Kerala. Kathakali is a world-famous art form that originated and is practiced in Kerala, a kind of dramatized dancing usually depicting stories from the Mahabharata performed by actors wearing highly stylized makeup, elaborate headgear, and costumes that are often a riot of colors. The end result of this makeup generally looks like the faces in this picture.

God’s Own Country in Sapphire Blue and a bit of Emerald Green

Two of Kerala’s main tourist attractions, the beauty of its backwaters and houseboat vacations come together with the Vembanad Lake shining all sapphire blue dotted by houseboats on a very hot day under impossibly blue skies, with the little emerald green island with its coconut trees standing in sharp contrast to the blue above and below. Paradise is this! Pay a visit to God’s Own Country when you can, to unwind and leave all your troubles ashore! The location is just off the “finishing point” at Alappuzha (Alleppey).

The Picturesque Nilambur Road Railway Station

The quaint, picturesque rural Indian Railways setting: Little train headed by a hooded cab unit diesel engine waits among hills and forests. The rake of the Nilambur Road – Thiruvananthapuram Rajya Rani Link Express headed by Erode WDM3D #11149 rests at the Nilambur Road railway station in Kerala on a cloudy and rainy evening, awaiting its departure later in the day. The Nilambur Road Railway station near the little town of Nilambur in the far reaches of Malappuram district, is the end point of the Shoranur – Nilambur spur, at the foothills of the Western Ghats which can be seen in the background. This 41 km historic Broad Gauge railway line was built by the British to easily transport Teak and other forest produces easily from the forests to the coast for shipping to England.
