The Kani Konna or Golden Shower tree and its blooms or Cassia Fistula (scientific name) blooms as the time for Kerala’s second most important cultural festival, Vishu approaches, which falls today, April 14. Vishu coincides with the Malayalam month Medam 1 on the Kollavarsham (Malayalam calendar), and used to be observed as the New Year falling on the Vernal Equinox for many centuries, before the calendar was changed and Chingam 1 was made the technical New Year. But still, Vishu is celebrated as the New Year in Kerala. The Kani Konna is popularly used as a part of the “Vishu Kani”, the ritul first thing seen on the New Year. The Kani Konna is also Kerala’s state flower.
A very dirty WAP4 #22255 of Southern Railways’ Erode Electic Loco Shed arrives at Changanasserry Railway Station hauling the famous 12623 Chennai Central – Thiruvananthapuram Mail. The locomotive badly needs a wash, as it looks like it had picked up all that the rains the previous night could throw at it. WAP4s hauling the “Madras Mail” as it is lovingly called, have a great time running through long stretches nonstop at full speed.
The WDM2 is Indian Railways’ most recognized and iconic locomotives ever. Also called ALCOs as they were designed by the American Locomotive Company, these 2400 hp diesel workhorses are responsible for Indian Railways becoming what it is today. One of them, the freshly painted and good looking WDM2 #17477 of the Krishnarajapuram (KJM) Diesel shed in Bangalore waits on a much-neglected branch spur line at the Bayyappanahalli junction on Old Madras Road, Bangalore, with officials waiting to guide it along across the busy road. Unlike other places, at this junction trains have to wait for the roads to be cleared for them so that they can cross and go onwards towards the BEML facility. This is quite a sight to behold! A pillar of the Bangalore Metro can be seen in the background.
The testament live concert in Bangalore in December 2012 was spectacular for one thing other than the music. The dazzling display of strobe lights in all colors was a highlight of the show which added an otherworldly feel to the entire event! Here we can see pink, violet, blue, red and white all mingling to create a throbbing visualization marvel! Check the other photos in the same series for more!
Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC)’s Volvo B7R bus after a minor accident which involved a collision with a truck in the broken, terribly curvy and dangerous Shiradi Ghat road (Highway) on the way from Mangalore to Bangalore. An overloaded platform truck carrying huge logs was being driven rashly on the wrong side of the road and one of the logs hanging from the side of the truck smashed the side windows leaving a gaping hole. Thanks to the nimble handling and power of the Volvo, the alert driver was able to maneuver the bus out of a full-frontal collision path. Fortunately there were no injuries as there was no one sitting in that seat. I was a passenger in this bus. This happened in 2008.
(PS: Another same type of accident on the same road. Those people were not so lucky 🙁 )
Round, Spherical, Fresh and yummy looking Oranges! Of course, these oranges are bright orange in color! Taken at a supermarket where they were lying ready to be consumed 🙂 This picture is my current wallpaper.
